Prisoners represent one of the most marginalized and vulnerable populations in any society. Daryel Legal Aid Center’s Prisoner Rights Defense program ensures that those behind bars receive fair treatment, legal representation, and protection of their fundamental human rights.

Why Prisoner Rights Matter

Deprivation of liberty should not mean deprivation of dignity or rights. Prisoners retain fundamental human rights, including the right to humane treatment, medical care, fair legal processes, and protection from torture or abuse. Daryel works to ensure these rights are respected in Somali detention facilities.

📋 Case Review & Appeals Assistance

Reviewing prisoner cases for legal errors, unjust sentences, or procedural violations and assisting with appeals when warranted.

🩺 Medical Rights Advocacy

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Reconnection Support

🔄 Reintegration Planning

Working with prisoners approaching release to develop reintegration plans, addressing legal barriers to successful return to society.

“I had been in prison for two years without seeing a lawyer. Daryel took my case, found procedural errors in my trial, and got me a new hearing. More importantly, they treated me like a human being when I felt forgotten by everyone else.”
